Organization Description
AKASHINGA, in partnership with Africa Futura Wildlife Restoration, is a nature conservation entity – a unique model NGO that delivers resilient nature conservation programmes of global significance through community-driven partnerships, creating resilient ecosystems where nature, wildlife, and communities thrive together, to restore and manage a growing network of Mozambique’s communal wildlife areas.
Role Description
The Human/Wildlife-Conflict Rapid Response Units are an experimental concept aimed at fostering coexistence of communities and wildlife through targeted non-lethal control measures. The Rapid Responders are deployed strategically to repel animals from areas where they may come into conflict with human beings, preventing the loss of life and livelihood. Through local employment and voluntary participation the RRU’s will become cornerstones of the local community in promoting coexistence and leading in a variety of mitigation efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct regular patrols and assessments of areas of frequent Human/Wildlife Conflict;
Ground-truth claims of Human/Wildlife-Conflict and collect data as required/instructed;
Lead/participate in nighttime (and daytime) efforts to physically repel wildlife from certain areas;
Support the HWC Officer and CLO’s in carrying out awareness and sensitization campaigns;
Lead/participate in the deployment & maintenance of mobile electric fences;
Take a leading role in skills transfer/maintenance to beneficiary communities in HWC mitigation;
Act as ambassadors for wildlife conservation and carry the mission home into one’s home community;
Key measures and objectives
Communities reached, households impacted and incidence of recommended changes implemented;
Community feedback, incidence of reported decrease in loss of life and livelihoods;
Incidence of reduced crop damage inside of fenced areas compared to outside (controlled);

Formal Education: A high school diploma preferred demonstrable ability to read/write;
Qualificação e Habilidades da oferta
Residence: Native of Coutada 5, born and raised;
Language: Excellent spoken Portuguese and local vernacular (Ndau, Chitswa). Written skills essential;
Endorsement: written support from their village head, Chief and local CGRN committee;
License: Demonstrable ability to ride a motorbike. A Class A (motorbike) license is a distinct advantage;
Personality: Hardworking, mission-oriented, committed, resilient and resistant to stress;

Positive community attitudes towards C5’s work in promotion of ‘coexistence’;
Cohesive and impactful joint Rapid Response Units established;
Well-maintained mobile electric fences achieve desired impact in priority areas;
